Auto Shop Group Plans (2–15 Techs)

The dealer down the street offers benefits. You can too — without a benefits manager or a 30% premium tax. Group plans for shops with 2 to 15 W-2 employees, structured so you can contribute 50% of the tech-only premium and let the team buy up for family. It's the cheapest retention tool you have.

What's covered

  • Major-medical group plan (PPO or HMO based on your area)
  • Optional dental, vision, and life add-ons in one bill
  • Employer-funded HSA contributions if you go high-deductible
  • Owner and spouse can be on the same plan as employees
  • Annual renewal with a licensed broker on call — no portal-only support

Who it's for

  • Independent shops, body shops, and diesel shops with 2–15 W-2 techs
  • Owners losing techs to dealer benefits packages
  • Shops that tried PEOs and got buried in payroll fees
  • Multi-bay operations adding a service writer or parts manager

Top questions from the thread

How much does the owner have to contribute?

Carrier minimum is usually 50% of the employee-only premium. You don't have to cover dependents — most shops let techs buy up family coverage at their own cost.

Do I have to offer it to everyone?

Yes — to every full-time W-2 employee (30+ hrs/wk). 1099 techs, part-timers, and apprentices under 30 hrs are not required.

Can I write off the premium?

Employer-paid premiums are deductible as a business expense. We'll send a summary for your CPA at renewal.
